Winter has been here for too long…Don’t you think? We all need those warm sunny days and some spring air.
However, we can always brighten the day with our meals! It’s always a great idea to stop for a smoothie. Or start with a smoothie in my case.
It’s a pineapple day today, the tropical king.
I don’t really spend much time analyzing which ingredients to throw into the Vitamix but this morning I almost craved spirulina-pineapple combination with fresh spinach. It’s later I realized my body wanted some vitamin C since all the ingredients are rich in this vital immunity vitamin.
So, few words about the main ensemble
This tropical plant has amazing health benefits. It boosts immunity, helps bone recovery, regulates blood pressure, reduces inflammation, and is known to improve your vision. It’s rich in vitamin C, B6, beta-carotene, manganese, potassium and fiber. It also contains bromelain – an enzyme extract that breaks down proteins and helps digestion. That’s why pineapples are so popular for weight loss. But remember that the fruit is very acidic and may burn your stomach if you eat pineapple alone as your first meal.
Spinach contains folic acid, vitamins B1, B2, B9, A, C, K, beta-carotene, iron, chlorophyll, calcium, manganese, magnesium and antioxidants.
Spinach greatly diminishes in size when cooked, please remember this. If you put a handful of spinach in your stew, omelette or noodles, don’t be surprised if it dissolves completely. Be generous if you want to find it in the cooked meal.
Spinach is an excellent ingredient for freshly squeezed detox-juices and smoothies. It has a mild taste and won’t outtaste the other foods. I love to add spinach to various smoothies, salads, pastas and creamy pureed soups.
Everyone knows oranges contain vitamin C, but did you know they also contain B-vitamins, citric acid, carotenoids (antioxidants), potassium and are a good source of fiber? I love oranges especially when they are sweet (obviously).
By the way, the best oranges and orange juice I’ve ever had – were in Port de Sóller – a village and port in Mallorca, Spain. If you’ve never been to Balearic Islands, I can tell you Mallorca is lovely! It’s very different across the island, there are countless ports and ancient towns, seaside cafes, ripe fruits, aquamarine sea and yachts. Oh, those lovely summer memories…
Where were we… Oh, enjoy the recipe! It’s as simple as just peeling the fruits.
